A LOVELY TACTILE EARLY 19TH CENTURY BOSUNS STARTER ALSO KNOWN AS KOSH OR PERSUADER. MADE OF TWISTED BALEEN SHAFT MOUNTED ON EITHER SIDE WITH LEAD WEIGHT COVERED WITH HEMP TWINE.
THIS TYPE OF KOSH WOULD BE CARRIED ABOARD SHIP BY THE BOSUN AND HIS MATE AND USED TO REPRIMAND ANY INSUBORDINATE OR LAZY CREW MEMBERS TO GET THEM TO WORK AT A SATISFACTORY PACE HENCE THE NAME 'STARTER'.THE BOSUN WAS A PETTY OFFICER OF THE DECK CREW ASSINGNING TASKS DOLING OUT WHACKS TO SLUGGISH CREW TO KEEP THEM ON THEIR TOES. THEY WERE ALSO CARRIED ON LAND BY THE PRESS GANGS WHO WERE TASKED WITH FINDING NEW CREW MEMBERS FOR HIS MAJESTY'S NAVY. BOUGHT FROM A PRIVATE COLLECTION FAMILY ORIGINATING FROM CANADA.
