A SUPERB SLOPE SIDED SEACHEST OF DOVETAILED CONSTRUCTION MADE OF FIGURED CAMPHOR WOOD TIMBER. LOVELY GOLDEN AMBER COLOUR, DRAWERED INTERIOR WITH CANDLE BOX LID COMPARTMENT, PERIOD BRASS ESCUTCHEON & LOCK. THE 19TH CENTURY IRON CARRYING HANDLES PERIOD REPLACEMENTS.
CAMPHOR TIMBER WAS TRADITIONALLY USED FOR ITS PROPERTIES OF BEING FRAGRANT AND RESILIENT TO WOODWORM.
CHESTS LIKE THESE WOULD HAVE BEEN USED BY SAILORS TO HOLD THEIR WORLDLY POSSESIONS UPON EMBARKING ON A VOYAGE, AND WOULD OFTEN PASS FROM ONE GENERATION OF SAILOR TO ANOTHER. THEIR 'SLOPED' DESIGN WAS ONE OF FUNCTION IN STABILITY AND SAVING SPACE IN CRAMPED CONDITIONS ABOARD SHIP.
